Terminology

Orthosis - An externally applied device that is designed to support, align, prevent and correct deformities, or improve function of parts of the body. Often referred to as a brace.

Prosthesis - An artificial substitute for a missing part body part, such as a limb. Often referred to as an artificial limb.

Achilles Tendon - The Achilles tendon (common calcaneal tendon) is comprised of tendons from several different muscles of the hindlimb. The main components being the superficial digital flexor muscle and tendon, the gastrocnemius tendon, and the combined tendon of the gracilis, semitendinosus and biceps femoris muscles.

Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) - The cranial cruciate ligament is one of several ligaments that stabilize the knee (stifle) joint. It is analogous to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans.

Stifle - A joint in the hind legs of quadruped mammals such as horses and dogs—equivalent to the knee in humans.

Tarsus (hock) - A joint between the tarsal bones and tibia of quadruped mammals such as horses and dogs—equivalent to the ankle in humans.
